Antonio Joli

Antonio Joli was an Italian painter and scenographer, renowned for his vedute (view paintings) and capricci (architectural fantasies). During his brief but significant stay in England from 1744 to 1748, Joli created several important works depicting Richmond upon Thames, contributing to the area's artistic legacy.

Joli's English Sojourn

Invited to England by Lord John Spencer, Joli arrived in London in 1744. While primarily engaged in painting theatrical scenery for the King's Theatre in the Haymarket, he also produced numerous views of London and its environs for wealthy patrons.

Although not a resident of Richmond, Joli visited the area to capture its famous vistas, which were highly prized by 18th-century art collectors and connoisseurs.
